You are invited to join the above group and grow indigenous flowers, herbs, trees, fruit trees, and unusual vegetable seedlings organically.

Perhaps you are clearing a garden and need to find new homes for discarded plants.

All the above plus any garden tools will be welcome for distribution to home gardens, school gardens, greening of streets and parks in Khayelitsha and other areas.

BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT TO THE COMMUNITY

Christine Xaba with her bed of broad beans

* The Home Gardens’ Project supports Abalimi home-growers group, which is headed by Christina Kaba and her team of workers in Khayelitsha.

* They make their own compost, which is used so plants do have good start in life. Christine & her team show the home gardeners how to care for their plants and are available for further advice and help. Local people look after the trees and shrubs in the Peace Park. Teachers and pupils are involved with the school gardens. Previously unemployed have been trained to share their knowledge and experience with the community.

* Plants, which will be very much appreciated, are colourful indigenous flowering plants;Restios; indigenous and other herbs ; unusual vegetables; trees for gardens and street preferably indigenous. Indigenous water-wise and Mediterranean plants will be best. Indoor plants and garden tools are also welcome.

* The cost should be minimal. Use up left over seeds. Cuttings. Gardens being cleared of plants at beginning and end of seasons or by developers. Unwanted presents! Another source are plants e.g. Celtis Africana seeded by birds, bats, wind, in gardens which gardener wants to remove.
